In 1957 the UN recognized the right to self-determination for the colony of Spanish Sahara. In 1975 Spain withdrew but turned the colony over to invading Moroccan troops. The UN recognized the government of Western Saraha in exile. A struggle for independence has continued to the present day with opposition members being imprisoned and tortured daily.
